Where do Business and Marketing Strategy Intersect with the Rapture?

By: Cynti Oshin

At the point where a clever entrepreneur sees the opportunity to exploit one of the scariest things to come our way since, well, 1994. That was the last time Harold Camping predicted the end of the world as we know it.

My marketing hat is off to some brilliant business concepts that arose from the notion that if there's one thing every advertiser and politician knows it's this: Scare tactics work. So says Constantine von Hoffman on bnet.

Businesses cropped up offering to take care of your pets after the Rapture (Eternal Earth Bound Pets); books offering advice to those left behind (How to Profit From the Coming Rapture: Getting Ahead When You're Left Behind); party/event planners offering an opportunity to dance right up until you are sucked up to heaven presumably (Brightest Young Things, Washington DC); even postings on Craig's List offering to take earthly belongings off of those who felt certain they would be on the fast track to eternal bliss.

Now that the Rapture has come and gone (at least I think it has, so far no one I know is missing) there should be a whole other round of business and marketing opportunities. I am guessing that Harold Camping, who at the time of this writing has yet to show up to his radio gig in Northern California, might be working on a new strategy for how he's going to support himself. It appears his credibility might have tanked on the second time around.
