Many marketer's didn't believe the new startup Airbnb, newest competitor to Vacation Rental By Owner (VRBO) would succeed. Now worth over $1 billion in value and a staggering 20 million connections and users, this startup company proves to be a great success story. Beginning in 2008, at the leading edge of recession and denied by investors, the company's large following helped build credibility. Airbnb is a vacation rental service that allows you to find a place to stay in 13,328 cities throughout 182 countries. Users can post and stay at unique spaces from anywhere in the world. From a house, couch, boat to even a country- (yes, a country) people can book from a night to even a month. This is the affordable option to capture not only the culture, the community but all the amenities you look for away from home. Featured on the New York Times, CNN and TechCrunch, celebrity Ashton Kutcher is even an investor. While many investors passed on Airbnb initially, many of which are now kicking at themselves from the company's huge success. In fact, companies who passed on the startup are now dictating investment decisions based on Airbnb. The CEO and founder, Brian Chesky started with a marketing strategy and service that no one believed would last, the key to the pudding was indeed marketing. What can marketers learn from this startup? With 1.6 million nights booked to date, will you try out the rental vacation service?
