You bet they are. And so are we by simply using his name in the headline. This week's media blitz/train wreck that is Charlie Sheen has been a ratings boon for all the media outlets that are covering his appearances. Late night talk shows are having a heyday too. And I suppose we should ALL be ashamed of ourselves. It is on the back of a very, very troubled man.
I heard a comment on talk radio this morning that Sheen’s Tragic Media Tour could be used as a teaching moment, rather than as an opportunity to raise ratings, increase hits, etc. Perhaps all of us who choose to join in the fray should offer something of value, something to help educate, something to counter balance what is turning into a freak show.
One of the best branded non profits ever is Alcoholics Anonymous. It has managed to do this without spending a single penny on marketing, without ever attaching itself to any political perspective or leveraging any celebrity for its purposes. Its mission is simple and has remained consistent since day one:
“Alcoholics Anonymous® is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.”
AA is committed to helping everyone 'from jail to Yale'. If you or someone you know struggles with alcohol or drug addiction, check it out. If only Charlie would.

Cynti,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, I think in many ways the media, talk shows, late night, etc are almost glorifying a man with serious issues and a very troubling life. The idea of using his life as a teaching moment instead is a very enlightening way of looking at the situation. Thanks for bring it to our attention!
Thank you, Rob. Since we all have access to an audience, we ought to make the most of it, yes?
