What makes a great boss?

By: Cynti Oshin

I recently wrote about what makes a great employee, which of course leads to what makes a great boss. Bob Sutton, management professor at Stanford University says great bosses have the ability to tune into their people. They project power, lock into their teams' loyalty and boldly defend their backs. Bosses matter. Bad ones can shorten your life. Good ones can empower you beyond your wildest imagination. Read on and see what Professor Sutton has to say.

Tell us the worst thing a boss of yours ever did. Whoever has the best (or most nightmarish) story gets 1,000,000 Stanton & Everybody bonus points. And we'll watch your back for you.

  2. I once had a boss who wrote me an e-mail outlining his plans for the future of our alternative energy company. We had just invested hundreds of millions of dollars into off shore windmill farms and two weeks later, in said e-mail, he decided to go in a different direction, tidal turbines in the Hudson River. This boss also decided it was a good idea to buy massages on company credit cards in Reno.
